It's true that in the UK, people from the Indian subcontinent are
labelled 'Asian' and people of Chinese origin are labelled Chinese, so
reporting the Va shootings as being carried out by an Asian is confusing
to Brits.
On the other hand, prOn sites advertising 'Asian' almost invariably mean
'Chinese' or 'Japanese', otherwise they explicitly say eg 'Indian' or
'Iraqi'.
Another interesting UK usage is that Russian mafia heads who transfer
their assets to the UK become legitimised as 'oligarchs', eg Abramovich.
