It has actually been known about since the re-recordable disc was
invented by Tandy Corp.

The laser doesn't "burn" pits in the disc record layer. It merely
"impinges" on it. Heat relaxes the impingement. That's how the
"erase" mode works. The laser just stays on, and heats the entire
track evenly, relaxing the recorded data back to even. Formal
erasures, however, don't erase everything, just the data area, which
is why other readers/writers have problems with previously recorded
discs. The "heat 'em up" method relaxes the entire disc, rendering it
as if it had never had any data written to it.

It's actually old knowledge.
