Wierd hardware DVD error: Freeware to TEST VOBs on hard disk?

How can we TEST the "goodness" of a DVD VIDEO_TS directory on the hard disk
using widely available freeware on Windows XP?

I have the wierdest repeatable DVD authoring error which is why I ask.
1. I downloaded VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS directories using a bittorrent client
2. My software DVD players have no problem playing the VIDEO_TS.IFO
3. But ImgBurn & Nero burn DVD discs my hardeware DVD player won't play
:(

The problem is repeatable.
a. The ImgBurn/Nero discs play fine on software DVD players (WinXP)
b. Copying the VIDEO_TS to another computer has the same problem
c. All other discs play just fine on the hardware DVD player

I even tried re-ripping the DVD from the ImgBurn/Nero created DVD discs
using three methods (DVDShrink, DVDFab Decrypter, & RipIt4Me) and then
running both FixVTS and VOBBlanker freeware. No change. The results all
show the same ability to play on the computer without fail but failure to
play on my one hardware DVD player. This is so very frustrating!

I would normally think to conclude the hardware DVD player is bad save for
the fact it plays all other DVDs flawlessly. So what's the real problem?

One possibility is there is something "bad" in the bittorrent-downloaded
original VOB files that allows them to play on software DVD players but not
on my three-year old hardware DVD player.

Is there a freeware tool to TEST the "goodness" of VIDEO_TS.VOB files?
