'Usual' spec is that a dvd recorder will function exactly the same as a vcr,
with many added features. Just tune your program and choose if you want to
record to dvd or vhs.
Those added features include automatic menus/chapters, better and/or longer
recording times and convenient editing. These are well documented elsewhere.
What you can not do is transfer any copy protected items from vhs to dvd or
the other way.
Personally, I would stay away from combo units. My experience is the the dvd
part wears out long before the vhs part.
I have gone through several dvd players/recorders here, but the vhs units
just keep going and going....
