While my wife still uses Avira, I ditched it from my machine as it
seems a little too prone to "false positives" - i.e. it will detect a
keygen for something as being malicious, when it isn't necessarily the
case.
I now use the free one from Kaspersky, of which I have two things to
mention of note
1) I had problems with the mail checking service so had to disable it
2) If you install the IE security toolbar, Spybot S&D says it's a fake
As for firewalls, ideally, just use the one (same with antivirus
programs, having two running at once can bugger up your system -
although Sysclean, being a one-off checker, not an "installed" one
seems to be exempt, but some AV programs think it might be a virus in
itself due to faulty detection of the virus signatures it's using)
The Windows firewall is as much use as a choccy teapot, as it will let
*anything* out without asking. ZA might be a pain in the arse at
first, but once you've allowed everything you know should be on the
net, it shuts up until one of the programs changes (like Firefox after
an update, or Avira).
