At that price point (under US$100) I have NO idea what's available.

What you want to look for is a receiver (or an audio amp) that can
synthesize (or reconstruct) the center channel so you get dialogue.
If your DVD player can't do that then you need an amp that will; if
not, you only get L and R and no center (e.g., dialogue, which is
exactly your problem symptom).

You might want to visit a local Costco, Wal-Mart, Radio Shack,
Circuit City, Sears, or similar types of stores and see what's
available
in your budget range. Depending where you live, check the ads in
the Sunday newspaper for audio stores; you might just luck out and
find a $100 DD5.1 system with small speakers. I wish you success.
