The HD DVD, or the best possible print of the film?

I haven't seen the HD DVD, but the review I quoted before deemed it
adequate for the type of film Full Metal Jacket is, a grainy one.

I can quote other disc reviews though if you want.

"The fact of the matter is that Stanley Kubrick had his own preferences for
motion picture photography that were usually antithetical to the slick and
glossy style that Hollywood has weaned us all on. The Full Metal Jacket
cinematography is drab, hazy, flat, and grainy. That's the way it's meant
to look, and to be honest it's often quite beautiful in its way."

"It's not a grainy movie, although there are certainly individually grainy
shots (particularly in low light), and some level of film grain is visible
throughout much of its nearly two hour runtime. The image is more detailed
than a traditional DVD, though not to the same extent as other HD DVD
releases to date. A more robust palette appears to be the most noticeable
improvement. This is a fine presentation of Full Metal Jacket"

The grain is still somewhat sparkly (though nowhere as bad as on the SD
release).

"The one thing I noticed was some grain on the print, in some of the indoor
scenes it was almost a problem, but compare that with the sharpness of the
picture and you have a very happy medium. For the most part, this new HD
transfer is great and certainly "Full Metal Jacket" has never looked
better."

"The picture does maintain the film grain and all, but it doesn't look as
clean as you would expect from similar HD titles. "
