Another thing to do is have the 4:3 footage centred in a 16:9 frame
superimposed over a larger, blurred version of itself.
This is regularly done by Sky in the UK when replaying classic sporting
events shot on 4:3 but shown as 16:9.
Just something else that could help in the damage limitation exercise.
