I think both formats are in danger of suffering the same fate as DVD-A and
SACD (remember those?).
While there's still some hope for all of these formats (!?), I think Joe
Public is more interested in more downloadable-sized files for the moment.
Meanwhile, the corporate big boys are doing their darndest to stop
audiophiles/film buffs/technobuffs from enjoying their HD purchases to the
fullest with stricter region locking, tighter controls/agreements and copy
protection that stops people gaining easy-access in a manner that is now a
little more common on the non-hd formats.
If/when Joe Public ever cottons on to HD, he won't care too much about that
kind of thing, but for now, it seems the studios/coporations are going out
of their way to annoy their target audience.
If Blu-Ray has a larger share at the moment, my guess is it's because the
PS3 ensures a somewhat-guaranteed hardware population (even if PS3 sales are
well-down on what were expected/hoped).
