If you are missing something, I'm missing it too.
My take is that the prohibition is, in part, a carryover from
command-line readers - where the user could not browse a thread
easily.
Given some people's tendency to quote entire messages - where the
quoted text occupies my entire screen and then some - forcing me
to scroll down to see their one-line reply; I often *prefer* to
see people top-post.
