Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of AB-NORMAL BEAUTY, ALONE IN THE DARK
(1982), BLACK GIRL / BOROM SARRET, A BRAND NEW LIFE, CHRONO CRUSADE: THE
COMPLETE COLLECTION, 42ND STREET FOREVER (VOLUME ONE), KING OF THE
CORNER, KINO'S JOURNEY: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION, THE LAST DAYS OF
POMPEII, LAS VEGAS: AN UNCONVENTIONAL HISTORY, LILA SAYS (LILA DIT CA),
LOU REED: LIVE AT MONTREUX 2000, MADLAX: CONVERGENCE (VOLUME 5), NBA'S
TOP 10 GREATEST, RED GARTERS, and YUMERIA (VOLUME 2):

AB-NORMAL BEAUTY (reviewed by Joel Pearce, overall score 88/100):
"The market is being flooded with poorly made Asian horror titles that
all look the same and are trying to cash in on what was once a vibrant
and exciting genre. I am pleased to report that Ab-Normal Beauty
actually feels different and fresh. It's not for the faint-hearted,
perhaps, but is a creepy and fascinating good time."

ALONE IN THE DARK (1982) (reviewed by Dennis Prince, overall
score 88/100):
"'Well, Mavis, here's what you do. The next time you feel your intestine
coming out, move your hands in front of your face -- three times, like
that -- yes, and then the intestines will stay inside and you won't turn
to porcelain.'"

BLACK GIRL / BOROM SARRET (reviewed by Jennifer Malkowski, overall
score 92/100):
"One subtly brilliant detail of Black Girl speaks volumes about the
politics of the film, even though one could almost write it off as a
technical flaw: the 'improper' lighting and exposure of Diouana in her
white employers' French apartment. Her skin is extremely dark and I
almost thought it was an amateur mistake that Sembene just couldn't
quite light her enough to show her features. But watching her blend into
the dark floor tiles or coffee table and flatten like a two-dimensional
cutout against the pearly white walls, I realized that it could be
gracefully symbolic of her status in this white environment."

A BRAND NEW LIFE (reviewed by Chris Claro, overall score 85/100):
"Of course, no '70s examination of pregnancy would be complete without a
beatific lecture about the joys of motherhood from a swingin' hippie
chick and a visit to a natural childbirth class."

CHRONO CRUSADE: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION (reviewed by Rob Lineberger,
overall score 92/100):
"By combining the glossy action and horrific tone of Blood: The Last
Vampire with The Sound of Music's perky-nun-on-the-run vibe, Chrono
Crusade crafts a bloodfest that is as endearing as it is brooding."

42ND STREET FOREVER (VOLUME ONE) (reviewed by Paul Corupe, overall
score 80/100):
"There's a little something for every sleazehound on 42nd Street Forever
Vol. 1 whether your slightly off-center bag is giallo, mondo,
sexploitation, black action, or Spanish horror. Especially exciting is
the fact that many of the trailers featured on this disc are for films
not yet released on DVD, which means that this is the only place you're
likely to see them."

KING OF THE CORNER (reviewed by Mitchell Hattaway, overall score
85/100):
"I've been reviewing bad stuff for so long I didn't really know how to
convey my thoughts on a movie this good. Strange, huh?"

FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/kingcorner.php

KINO'S JOURNEY: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION (reviewed by Geoffrey Miller,
overall score 87/100):
"Everything about Kino's Journey bucks anime convention. During a time
when anime shows are conceived from the ground up as heavily commercial
multimedia enterprises (complete with tie-in merchandise and
videogames), it's a defiantly original and unclassifiable work -- about
as far away as possible from the usual design-by-committee product
shoved down Japanese teenagers' throats."

THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII (reviewed by Steve Evans, overall score
77/100):
"Like his other lesser-known films, such as The Black Scorpion,
O'Brien's special effects in are more interesting than the actors
reacting in front of them."

LAS VEGAS: AN UNCONVENTIONAL HISTORY (reviewed by Brendan Babish,
overall score 84/100):
"Would entities created to promote a city with a dubious (or
'unconventional') history pressure the filmmakers to downplay the
enormous human tragedy that is necessary to fund the glitz and glamour
that makes Las Vegas so appealing in the first place? After watching the
documentary, I can answer equivocally: sort of."

LILA SAYS (LILA DIT CA) (reviewed by Neal Solon, overall score 95/100):
"The common mistake that these films make is skipping the psychological
foreplay and assuming that bare skin, on its own, makes something sexy.
Lila Says keeps the skin to a minimum, but still manages to be one of
the most erotic, sexually charged films in recent memory."

LOU REED: LIVE AT MONTREUX 2000 (reviewed by Steve Evans, overall
score 93/100):
"Listen to the methodical buildup and release of blues tension on
'Tatters' -- a heartbreaking (and breathtaking) account of a doomed love
affair. In the midst of the pandemonium that climaxes the song, Reed
calmly lights a smoke, takes a quick drag, and stabs the cigarette
between the strings wrapped around his tuning keys. The band settles
into the jam as Reed chops on his Telecaster, his face intense, deadly
serious, like he's ready to debate the Devil over the price of admission
into Hell."

MADLAX: CONVERGENCE (VOLUME 5) (reviewed by Mitchell Hattaway, overall
score 90/100):
"I would be lying if I were to say I fully understand what is going on
in this series, but at least I can say I have a few more clues as to
exactly what is going on."

NBA'S TOP 10 GREATEST (reviewed by Dennis Prince, overall score 77/100):
"When a league attempts to tamper with the talent on display, eager to
prolong its effect or temporarily suppress its unbridled dominance (all
for reasons of monetary gain), we can all immediately detect illicit
manipulation."

RED GARTERS (reviewed by Rob Lineberger, overall score 93/100):
"Take the avant garde set design of Dogville and paint it in the
Technicolor glory of Munchkinland. Saturate the film with huge musical
numbers by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans while incorporating the self-
satirical bent of Singin' in the Rain. Base it all on an Airplane!-like
spoof of the Western genre. Finally, throw in lots of can-can dancers,
gunshots, and kissing. This is Red Garters."

YUMERIA (VOLUME 2) (reviewed by Mac McEntire, overall score 75/100):
"And, yes, there's the whole 'fan service' thing. This is where anime
creators take their popular female characters and put them in sexy,
revealing clothes. This is done, allegedly, to appeal to fans. Or
perhaps it's done for the animators' own amusement."
