Re: The Wedding-Industrial Complex -- or, why are Americans spending $28,000 on weddings?

I know more a few ministers who are genuinely appalled at the trend
towards big, extravagant weddings. But it is extremely difficult to
dissuade a young bride. The more extravagant, in fact, the better.

The diamond ring itself is one of the most successful scams of all time.
Diamonds are neither rare nor valuable...

I can't figure out what the attraction really is. I suspect that it's
something no bride would ever admit to. What if I just set fire to my
wallet?

And as a long time supporter of women's equality, I can't put into words
how dissappointed I am to see bride after bride after bride insist on
their fathers "giving them away". Yeah, yeah, I've heard the
explanation that it's all just tradition, but so are segregated lunch
counters.

Then again, there's really not much rational about a wedding in the
first place, is there?
