This is not the same as Girl Interrupted or Desperately Seeking Susan,
which people seem to have forgotten, was a Rosanna Arquette vehicle.
Jennifer Hudson's character is a very rare instance of the supporting
role that IS the starring role in the film. It was the same way
onstage. Effie is the emotional centre of the story, the symbolic
battleground between old school R&B and new school black pop. The
Deenie character (Beyonce's part) never carried that weight.
