Geekboy,
DVD-Rs are certainly more compatible for single layer than the +Rs. When I
started using dual layer -Rs 2 or 3 years ago, my coaster rate was nearly
100%, and I eventually switched to +Rs and things suddenly improved a lot. I
just finished doing some Google searching and it mostly confirms your
opinion that -R is still the preferred way to go for DL as well. Having
switched burners, brands of disks, and players a number of times in the last
few years, I must admit that I don't entirely know if my switch to +Rs was
the only explanation for why my results are so consistently good now, and it
may also be other factors. I do find that the +R dual layer disks from
Verbatim are totally trouble free and seem to play in all of my drives and
players, including Toshiba HD DVD, battery powered DVD players, etc. They
cost about $3 apiece versus about 25 cents for a Verbatim single layer disk,
so I can hardly recommend dual layer at all in most situations.
