Did you modify the dvd write strategy to get x1 burn speed?
I never had much luck improving burn quality by changing dvd write
strategy in the firmware.

I have experienced this before with crappy Optodisc dvd+rw's. Sounds
like it could be marginal media to me, bet your not using taiyo yuden
dvd-r's. Or it could be the drive's read laser is weaking and going
south.
Luckily the Pioneer DVR 106D does nero cdspeed quality test (pie and
pif errors), you can verify the quaility of your burned media and if
its filled with errors. A marginal disk, a thumbprint could cause
enough additional errors to make the disk un-readable.
