That's my guess, too.
The settings you mention refer to the unit's output signal, specifically the
number of horizontal lines and whether the scan is progressive or
interlaced. Your unit is failing to read the disc, so the output setting
isn't an issue.
When all else fails ... read the owner's manual. That should tell what kind
of discs the player can handle.
