Hmm... at the end of 2003 there were approx 66 million sold in the US. 
(Biggest Market for DVD's I wonder).  So it may be similar to total 
Video Game market at the end of 2003... around 399 million. 
 
Even with DVD there were limits to software. With Region Coding 
stopping you from picking up 'software' while on a trip to the Uk for 
example.
