Could be, but if .asf files created by the camera play back okay in
Windows Media Player (WMP), the implication is that the correct codec
is already installed on the system.
It's worth noting that over the years Microsoft has produced three
different MPEG-4 ASF/WMV codecs, known as Version 1, 2, and 3. The
names of the files involved are, I believe, as follows:
mp4sdmod.dll FourCC: MP4S
mp43dmod.dll FourCC: MP43
mpg4dmod.dll FourCC: MPG4
mpg4ds32.ax FourCC: MPG4
The first three files listed are DMO's (Direct Media Objects), so
they're not readily usable in just any old application, but the fourth
one is a regular DirectShow codec that should work in any application
program that supports the use of DirectShow codecs.
I don't know which one of these codecs these Aiptek cameras use
(although looking at one of these files in a hex editor should reveal
that information) but again, if WMP can play the files, then the
required codec would appear to be installed. Windows Movie Maker would
use the same codec.
Personally, I never recommend the use of codec packs.
