need basic data cd burning help

Posted by jbclem on 07/08/07 01:14

This is related to WinMx, because it's regarding a software program/data cd that I downloaded...and the enclosed
instructions are a bit too obtuse for me. Basically I'm faced with transferring a large (601mb) .mdf file to a CD and
it will then run autorun.

But I'm not clear what category to put this cd in, it's not an audio cd, it's not video, it has alot of data on it but
also program(s) to access the data. Should I use packet writing software, which apparently will format the cd-rom disk
in a way so that I can simply copy this .mdf file onto the cd-rom disk...or should I do an image burn and "write" it
onto the cd-rom disk. I'm confused about the basic terminology and see the words "burn" and "write" used
interchangeably. I'm also not clear as to the difference between an image file, and ISO file, and the kind of file that
packet writing software would allow me to copy.

You see, I need some real basic help here, and the help files in programs such as Nero, and Alcohol, skip this basic
stuff.

Also, Alcohol 120% doesn't seem to be set up to copy a file (on the hard drive) onto a cd-rom disk...am I missing
something there?

Thanks in advance for any help...I'll bet I'm not the only one who needs this.

jc
