I have the same unit, been working for 2 years. The only thing it seems to
do now, I don't know why, is it fails to power on for a scheduled timer
recording. I've determined that it won't power on if it's pulling in
content for the TV Guide, which happens in the early afternoon. If I
manually turn it on during these times and it's scheduled to record
something, it will immediately go into record mode. Very odd and bad
behavior. I might as well keep it on all the time. Still, something ain't
right with the machine and I flashed and reset it this morning. Only time
will tell if this fixes its habit as of late to stay in a coma when it
should be coming on.

Have you tried re-initializing the hard drive, doing a deep reset, setting
back to factory defaults, and flashing the unit to the latest and last
firmware? You can get the firmware and instructions on how to flash from
the Panasonic website. The file to look for is DMR-E85.EXE, which unpacks
to Pana_dvd.frm

According to the AVSForum, Philips and Polaroid are now the only
manufacturers of DVD recorders with built-in hard drive sold in the US.
Panasonic no longer makes a hard drive unit, at least for US markets. It
has something to do with an FCC requirement to sell units with an ATSC
tuner after March 1. The only thing I don't see with these units is a way
to pull in schedule content. Some people say the TV Guide was buggy, but
it was better than nothing, which is what these two units offer.
