1. Manufacturers often publish lists of recommended media which are based on
in-house testing and knowledge of the media table embedded in the DVD
drive's firnware. The problem is, branded media is seldom manufacturerd by
the owner of that brand, but is produced for them by one of a handful of
media producers. Brand name sellers often change suppliers, so an HP disc
may come from Taiyo Yuden originally, but now is sourced from CMC Magnetics
because they are cheaper. If the firmware of the DVD drive inside your
recorder does not know how to get optimal results (write strategy) with
that variety of CMC media, you may get failed recordings. If you are buying
new media and having problems, you may very well be running into this issue.
Often a firmware update from the recorder's manufacturer can address issues
with newer types of blank media.
2. If you are having problems recording the same exact media sitting on your
shelf, which worked properly in the past, the DVD drive inside your
recorder may be failing. If cleaning the laser lens does not help, it is
probably more economical to replace the machine.
