1x CD playback speed is considered ~300kbps. You are expecting 10x
that, however most modern drives can easily sustain 12x speed,
Most are capable of bursting at 32x speed (around 10mbps) because
they're usually DVD drives now. DVD requires minimum data rate about
6mbps
