That's not quite the same thing as the article discusses, where newer
blu-ray and HD-DVDs just don't work fully on existing players.
Pirates Of The Caribean is a good example for Blu-Ray - the menus are very
slow, and some of the bonus features just don't work at all. Why?
Because the blu-ray java "standard" wasn't quite finalized, so some
players no longer met the "new" standard and need an update.
At least they can be updated, but come on now...consumer electronics are
supposed to be appliances - not just another PC. You don't hear about
folks having to flash their oven's firmware so that it can cook the latest
pot-roast recipes, do you?
Seriously, let the technology companies play their little games with
incomplete products. I'm more than happy to wait until they've gotten the
bugs worked out before I spend any money on them.
