I think that this is not as unlikely as you think.

When people see a movie they like alot (whether Theatrical, dvd rental,
avi download, or dvd download), they want to own it. People like to
have things and the fact that it's easier now to see much more stuff,
to at least sample aton of stuff , or to see stuff you haven't even
heard of opens people up to more potential dvds to buy.

Although, to say that it fuels the entire industry is a longshot as i
can't imagine that the downloaders constitue more than (about) 5% of
the DVD buying population.
