How do you know the hard disk is defective? Can you format under
Functions?

You can install any brand hard disk inside the machine as long as it is of
the same interface and has equal or better read/write/seek performance and
capacity. You cannot get bigger capacity though. If the original hard
disk is 120GB, installing a larger disk won't get you more record time.
The capacity of the hard disk is burned into ROM and cannot be changed. In
other words, if you install a 200GB disk but the machine came with a 120GB,
only 120GB would be recognized by the OS. The recorder will format the
disk when you first power it on with the new disk. Or optionally format
the disk in the functions menu.
