What player are you using, and what is the sample rate of your files?
Some players won't handle sample rates lower than 16 kHz. This is a
dilemma for me, since I have speech files that I would like to compress
as much as possible, but then I may not be able to listen to them on a
cheap flash-memory player. Finding a suitable player is complicated by
the fact that specifications for the players do not seem to be available
even on the manufacturers' web sites.
On the other hand, I can play bitrate 8kbps, sample rate 8kHz on Windows
Media Player, with low sound quality (like telephone) but otherwise OK.
If WMP won't work for you, maybe there is something wrong with your files.
