Well, I guess that's one vote against. Ploink!
It looks like I'm going to have to try it and find out for myself. The nice
thing is those places (Walmart, Kmart, Sears, Big Lots) have a generous
return policy, i.e. return it within 30-90 days for a full refund. So if I
don't like it, I can take it back. If it's crap, it's crap, but maybe
not(?). I imagine almost anything would be better than my TV which might
have damaged speakers, but I won't know til I try it.
What I'm missing is experience in this area. I really don't know what to
expect because this is 100% new to me. I've never even seen nor heard a home
theater system. Nobody I know has one. I don't know what kind of sockets and
connectors are provided/required for connection to my DVD, VCR, TV,
satellite receiver, etc. Such things aren't generally described on the box
or online descriptions, insofar as I can discover. So it will be educational
just to buy a system, open the box, and see what it contains - then go from
them.
As you can see I'm still trying to talk myself into it, but am going to give
it a try, and will report back here with my findings. Anybody else with such
experiences, please feel free to chime in...
