I currently have a Lite-On 5005 where the drive door just stopped
opening, I was going to chuck the unit but decided to look inside and
it had the same ribbon and power supply as a PC, so I plugged a
nackered Pioneer unit in and it worked, to a fashion. Decided to take
a chance and buy a Lite-On DVD drive off Ebay, stuck it on and it's
working. Just doing a test record as we speak.
Need to velcro the unit on top of the standalone one but who cares!
Find out who makes the drive and then try and buy another of the same
brand, obviously you wont get the same model. My original standalone
is about 3 years old.

I'd be interested to see if that is easily and safely achieved?
