FWIW
In 30+ years of broadcasting I have never unpacked a tape, in any format. I
have, on occasion, had to black them for editing use, but didn't unpack them
before that. Of course, those were all "broadcast quality" tapes, so
whether there is a difference in QC or construction on consumer stuff, I
couldn't say.
