Well, don't just buy them a camera. Make them go half on it. They'll
appreciate it more and treat it right. (after they've saved up their
share, you can surprise them with a little extra on your side...). And
then let them go at it. There are books at the library, websites, etc,
and probably video classes at the local community college. But before
all of that, they should start making stuff on their own. A friend of
mine got a video camera of his own in high school and his parents were
really supportive: they'd drive him to go pick up props, watch his
constant stream of funny and weird movies, and cameo whenever they
could. Because this was his undertaking, he went out and learned what
he needed to learn and thought about it, etc. But the best thing did
was just let him go out there and discover it all instead of showing
him how it was supposed to be done. Later they can worry about being
taught "the ways."
