The sub props for Red October were in fact built by us. The were not balsa
although there was some wood, a lot.. much was vacu-formed plastic. They
were 25-30 feet long and required massive sealed rooms for the motion
control photography. We also developed a few special Mo-co rigs for the
shoot. I designed an optical sensor based system to maintain the fog effects
in each sealed stage at a specific density. The exposure times were so long
that each shot took days to shoot. They looked awesome in the fog while they
were being shot.
It was on that show where I met one of my life long best friends. His father
was the producer. We still work together.
Try not to be such an idiot. Not everyone spends their entire life as an
amateur videographer. It is truly bad form.
