You do know, Richard, that's it's 8-bit, 4:2:0, long-GOP,
lossy-compressed (both spatially and temporally) MPEG-2 video, just
like 1080i HDV, but at 35 Mbps instead of 25 Mbps, right?
And although the audio is non-compressed LPCM instead of 4-to-1
lossy-compressed MPEG-1 Layer II, the whole datastream is enclosed
within an MPEG-4 wrapper. Also, depending upon your NLE, you may need
to use a Sony-supplied utility program to change the wrapper from
MPEG-4 to MXF prior to editing.
Just so you know what you're looking at. As a wise old man once said,
don't confuse love with lust.
When it comes to comparisons, especially of the low-light flavor, I
especially like the following two images.
http://www.slashcam.de/images/texte/564-Low_HVX-HVX200Low.jpg
http://www.slashcam.de/images/texte/564-Low_Sony-LowEx.jpg
The first shot came from a Panasonic AG-HVX200 (not the one that nappy
offered to loan to PTravel, though). The second shot came from a
pre-production sample of the Sony PMW-EX1. Figured that PTravel might
be able to make use of that low light capability the next time that he
shot night scenes of Amsterdam (footage that I loved, by the way,
thank you, sir, almost wrote to you about it).
For anyone who might be interested, I do provide fairly complete
PMW-EX1 coverage beginning at http://www.humanvalues.net/hdv/#xdcamhd
and I intend to keep the information as up-to-date as I can for as
long as I can.
The two JPEG images that I just linked to above are from a slashCAM
German language review of a pre-production sample of the PMW-EX1,
linked to from my Web page.
