Y connectors have little effect on audio and (usually) a serious
deleterious effect on video.
The reason has to do with impedances. The audio inputs place a
negligible load on the audio outputs, but the video inputs are a
significant load on the video output.
In addition to switches (as mentioned by kaboom), there are
distribution amplifiers that solve the impedance problem
electronically. Also there are switches that can be controlled by a
remote, which is more convenient than having to get up and walk over to
the entertainment center :-)
