You're not going to get the Chinese to give up their cars -- it's not a
question of presitge, but of the visible representation of prosperity and
success that has come in the post-Mao period. China's mass transit is
hit-or-miss: many cities have subways, and there is an extensive inter-urban
rail system, though it can be rather unpleasant.
