Hi Folks,
I've had a ring out of the blue today from the fraud department of one of my
credit cards.
The call was wrt to number of suspicious transactions that had been made to
the card.
I hadn't used the card for a while, other than a month back where I placed
a software order with Handango.com. However about 5 days ago I updated my
account at Play.com with details of the card, but did not place on order.
According to the fraud department a number of transactions have been
attempted including purchases at Play.com (hmmmm!) and Air France among
others.
They have cancelled the card and will be sending me a new one along with a
dispute form in case earlier transactions slip through the Net.
Now I only place online orders from my trusted home PC, run regular AV and
Spyware updates etc and cross shred any documents going into the garbage.
I'm leaning towards the assumption that either Play.com or Handango.com has
been compromised.
Googling has no shown up any issues with Handango.com, however Play.com and
"credit card fraud" are not exactly unrelated terms in the past. I would
have hoped they have tightened security but I find it a bit of a coincidence
that these unauthorised transactions happened shortly after I added my card
to my Play account.
Has anyone on the newsroup had any recent Play.com issues? I guess I was
lucky in that I rarely used the card in question so the transactions stuck
out like a sore thumb.
