How is this more portable and cheaper than DV tapes?
Maybe I don't understand your question. You don't need a glorified
external drive to transfer footage from your camera to your computer; you
only need a $10 firewire cable (the same cable used to connect to the
FireStore).
But if you did, for some reason, want to capture directly to hard disk,
you can do it with a laptop and a $100 external USB drive. Only, you'll
actually be able to store a hell of a lot more than just 1.5 hours of
footage, as per the FireStore product spec.
This strikes me as yet another overpriced gadget.
