Well... With the HVX200 DV tape can not handle to format so the P2 cards or
the Firestore are the only method.
If you don't own one I can see why you may not prefer it.

So.. your laptop has to be near the camera. Within the max firewire cable
distance.
If you shoot everything on a tripod in a controlled environment .. that may
be ok.

Running ANY program on a laptop on location is just not something that is
normally efficient and dependable. That's why you got the response you did.
Not because it "goes in one ear and out the other". While you learn how to
do this you shouldn't assume that we haven't already thought of or tried
your solutions in the past.
