I tried the wikipedia article's split-circle gamma test with a fairly
expensive Viewsonic CRT monitor. It has no onscreen user gamma setting, per
se, so I manipulated the Brightness and Contrast to get it "in compliance"
with the pattern test. The display looked overly bright and washed out.
Blech! I put it back the way it was. Maybe the CD that came with my
monitor contains appropriate gamma tweaks. I hesitate to mess with it.

I know OP Ed Light has a real problem. I had some trouble myself with a
DVD I burned last month from a Mini-DV wedding video. It looks beautiful on
CRT TV's but not so good on the CRT computer monitor -- lot of washout in
the bright areas -- not fixable with the monitor controls.

Windows Photo Editor will do gamma correction. A minor tweak of gamma
there brings the wiki article test circle (copy-paste) into compliance.

Bottom line: Oh, crap, another thing to worry about!
