"Director Masaki Kobayashi considered Harakiri the ultimate anti-samurai
picture. As film expert (and Criterion regular) Donald Richie observes
in his video introduction, the film is both generic and non-generic,
incorporating the historical setting and trappings of the samurai genre
while turning many of its conventions on their heads."
