Let's be clear here. There are two causes of degradation: encoding on
the machine and transfer losses. The former is constant, although the
encoder will work best on clean input.
The transfer degradation is as follows:
Firewire: bit-perfect. No degradation at all.
S-Video: significant: added noise, reduced resolution
Composite: even worse.
The only way you can tell how bad the jump from Firewire down to S-Video
is with your camcorder, source material and level of expectation is to
try it.
Note: it's S-Video (or Y/C), not S-VHS.
