Sometimes you don't want to scale down that high-rez pic, for example
if you want to create digital matte paintings or other special FX you
can zoom into and pan around with a virtual camera. Then there is no
substitute for sheer numbers of pixels. Same for stills you want to
incorproate into HD work. Most NLE's I know of give you the option of
leavign the size alone and letting it run off the edges, or shrinking
the image down.
