Mark,
The greed factor has made this format war inevitable, it seems. If Beta
versus VHS wasn't enough proof of how consumer confusion thwarted sales,
then the industry giants like Sony and Toshiba, etc. and the studios deserve
what they get, IMHO.
One would imagine that HD DVD in some form is absolutely inevitable, and the
fact that consumer mainstream products and vendors are supporting it will
foster demand sooner rather than later. Your 3 to 5 year forecast is
probably pessimistic given the extremely fast adoption of standard DVDs,
flat screens, HDTV, etc. As you are probably aware, (regarding games) the
new Xbox 360 will support high def DVD imminently. (The 2600 Atari stuff is
indeed a nostalgia trip and my son still cherishes the PacMan and wonderful
game called "Adventure" I bought him, both of which went on to sell millions
of copies.)
The costs of running multiple inventories of movies in HD, SD, widescreen,
fullscreen, BluRay, HD-DVD, etc. will be unsupportable in my view, and thus
the marketplace will decide what remains and what doesn't. It is very hard
for me to imagine the case where HD DVD will totally fail, however, and my
money would be bet on a blended BluRay and HD-DVD format replacing standard
DVD in the next 5 years. But who knows.........only time will tell.
