Basically anything written before 1923 is in the public domain. So it
doesn't have to be trad... you can know O'Carolan wrote it or Mozart
wrote it, and still be able to perform it.
Note that there are a few scary exceptions of songs that people think
are traditional, but are not. "Happy Birthday" is perhaps the most dramatic
example.
