I just did that in one of our systems at the office.
(The one that used to be the main editing system.)

It might be worth the $15 to throw a generic (OHCI-
compatible) Firewire card into this system and remove
the Matrox stuff.

The Matrox RT was hot stuff a few years ago, but seems like
more trouble than it is worth with modern CPUs and OSes.
At least, IMHO.

NOTE HOWEVER that you will lose the hardware accelleration
of video rendering if you remove the Matrox card (assuming it
was working properly). Your 1.8GHz P4 processor is no
slouch at doing the rendering itself, but not as fast as a new
system (or as fast as the Matrox when working properly).

Only you can make the judgement call whether hardware render
is worth more than the annoyance of the capture video monitor.

Lack of ability to monitor the capture picture on the computer
screen seems like only a minor annoyance to me. You can
always monitor the video with a regular TV screen.

Much more important (at least to me) would be the ability
to control the Camcorder/VCR from the capture window
(to allow you to do batch capture).
