I think GPU rendering will provide NLEs and compositors with the biggest
speed up for years if the software developers care to code for them. A
combination of dual core/procs and GPU rendering should make many
compositing tasks realtime and render (excuse pun) expensive proprietary
hardware unnecessary. If the likes of Autodesk (discreet) aren't worried by
the tentatives steps Apple have taken with Motion they should be.

With dual core GPUs on the way the odds are stacking up against the systems
manufacturers Avid and Autodesk. My money is on the likes of Adobe and
Apple with strong intergrated "Studio" products and no hardware products of
their own to protect they utilise the power of the graphics card along with
available CPU cores.

A pile of old graphics cards is preferable to trying to sell an Adrenaline
on Ebay for a tenth of what was paid for it.
