RICHARD CROWLEY, RYAN, AND GARY BETTAN (AND EVERYONE ELSE)

James C. Allison:
I used these three names in the subject line of this post because Richard
had been so kind as to respond a number of times to my request for
assistance. Ryan also responded. And Gary is from VideoGuys, from whom I
bought the Matrox Millennium G450 and the Matrox RT2500, w/ ProPack (which
included Premiere 6.0) four years ago.

I wanted to run something past you all, for in my search for information
concerning the inability to see an image in the "preview" and "MovieCapture"
window, I found this:

========
"For those interested in just the facts, Premiere version 6.0 provides two
absolutely necessary enhancements: 16:9 (non-square pixels) support and
complete IEEE-1394 DV capture and output. The latter capability means that
any computer with an OHCI IEEE-1394 interface can edit with no additional
hardware. (Note: Premiere supports only Microsoft, not Texas Instruments,
OHCI IEEE-1394 drivers. This is an unfortunate limitation.)"
========

Alright, with that said, in DeviceManager I found two IEEE 1394 cards, to
wit:

1. OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller; and
2. Texas Instrument OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller.

And then while looking in the Matrox RT2500 Installation and User Guide,
there is in the section on Capture Issues under Possible cause 6, the
following:

Problem: DV device shows up as Imaging device.
Windows Device Manager may recognize your DV device as an imaging device.

Solution: Re-install device driver
You'll have to remove your DV device as an imaging device and re-install the
drivers.

To re-install the device driver in Windows 2000:
1. turn on your DV-1394 device.
2. Right click on "My Computer".
3. Select "Manage".
4. Selet "Device Manager".
5. Click the plus sign beside "Imaging devices".
6. Right click "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR", then select "Uninstall".
7. A message will appear about uninstall the device, click "OK".
8. Choose "Action > Scan for hardware changes."
9. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" starts. Click "Next"
10. Select Search for a suitible driver for my device (recommended), click
"Next".
11. Under "Optional search locations" make sure nothing is selected and
click "Next".
12. Windows will automatically find the "C:winnt\inf\dvcam.inf" driver file.
Click "Next".
13. Click "Yes" to continue.
14. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" dialog box will appear. You now have the
proper driver installed. Click "Finish" to exit.
15. Your DV device should now be listed under "Sound, video and game
controllers" in "Device Manager".

I did 1 through 9. But the New Hardware Wizard went ahead and reinstalled
the DV device back in "Imaging Devices".

So after doing this process a number of times, I have just left it at that.

Now about the other situation of the Texas Instruments IEEE 1394 Host
Controller. I disabled it. And then started Premiere, and got a notice that
it cannot control the MiniDV Cassette Deck. So I re-enabled the TI IEEE 1394
Host Controller, and Premier COULD once again control the MiniDV Cassette
Deck.

Anyway, I'm still left with watching the image on the TV screen while doing
captures, though I AM able to control the MiniDV Cassette Deck from the
MovieCaptureWindow.

And finally, on the VHS Cassette that I got from VideoGuys about Premiere
6.0, it said that 75% of the problems encountered were IRQ related. So take
a look at the following list. It is the IRQ list for my system.
=======
TheScorcher IRQ List

9 - Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
9 - Matrox Millennium G450 DualHead - English
9 - Matrox RT2500 - English
9 - Matrox DV/MPEG Codec Driver
9 - Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
9 - Creative SB Audigy
9 - OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
9 - Adaptec AHA-2940U/AHA-2940UW PCI SCSI Controller
9 - M-Audio Delta 1010LT
9 - Intel 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller 2442
9 - Intel 82801BA/BAM SMBUS Controller - 2443
9 - Intel 82891BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444
14 - Primary IDE Channel
15 - Secondary IDE Channel
8 - System CMOS/Real Time Clock
13 - Numeric Data Processor
6 - Standard Floppy Disk Controller
4 - Communications Port (COM 1)
3 - Communications Port (COM 2)
12 - PS/2 Compatible Mouse
1 - Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard
10 - MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device
========

And one of the things that the Matrox RT2500 User's Guide recommends is to
create a second Hardware Profile specifically for use when editing video.

So in the above list, there are a LOT of devices on IRQ 9. Which of those
devices are not necessary to the Premiere/RT2500 editing process?

Thanks in advance for responses.

Regards
