I would be interested in your source for this assertion.

This 'Add a color correction filter to a piece of video' is not the same
as doing the same in the physical world with physical filters. Adding a
filter in Final Cut Pro allows modification of the video to which it is
applied, but also allows this modification to be removed or copied to
apply the same adjustments to other pieces of video.

Was the source of this an Avid salesperson by any chance? :-)

Most NLE packages has some form of this. Most of the time amateurs lay
these effects on so thickly that it looks like the 'film' was used to
tie down loads of firewood and later fed through the worst projector
ever made that had a wire brush stuck in the gate making scratches. Be
subtle else your 'film look' will end up like a parody of the worst
features of film.

I would have to agree with Martin here.

There are some books around, as well as some online resource to help you
do this, such as:
<http://www.lafcpug.org/feature_video_film.html>
<http://www.lafcpug.org/film_look.html>
<http://www.bealecorner.com/trv900/filmlook.html>
<http://www.urbanfox.tv/production/filmlookindex.htm>
<http://www.videouniversity.com/filmtovi.htm>
etc, etc.
