I guess I'll top-post here since Smarty did.
In the future, I promise to use both the words "proxy" and
"intermediate" as often as possible. :)
But seriously, if I had more time to devote to this, I would have
written much more than I did and I would have included some specific
examples of how various NLEs (and various NLE users) handle HDV
editing.
Some while back, someone posted a message to this group stating that
they felt that HDV was "just another codec", or some words very much
to that effect. Personally, I hold a different point of view on the
matter.
Because of its long-GOP interframe MPEG-2 compression scheme, and this
applies especially to the 1080i (HDV2) flavor of HDV with a GOP length
of 15 in 60 Hz mode, HDV editing is *not* like editing DV or any
intraframe compressed video format. If it were, there would be little
or no need for the use of intermediate codecs or proxy files.
Many people seem to be mislead by HDV when they see the data transfer
rate - 19.7 Mbps for 720p HDV and 25 Mbps for 1080i HDV - and think
that it's just like editing DV25 material. This is not to mention the
fact, and I'll direct my comments here primarily to the 1080i flavor
of HDV, that many people buying HDV camcorders these days a) don't
have a computer display device (monitor) capable of displaying the
full 1920 by 1080 video frame nor 2) do they even own a high
definition television on which to view their final footage.
The bottom line is that the proper editing of any HD format, whether
low-end HDV or uncompressed HDCAM SR footage from a Sony F950,
requires not only workflow changes but also an investment in
equipment.
