Bill,
Jan Ozer did some published comparisons of this type in eventDV Magazine
which you may also be able to find on the eventDV website. Jan is also very
responsive to email and is an excellent source for information on HDV
cameras and editing, particularly recently since he published a 4-part
magazine series comparing HDV NLE systems quite exhaustively.
I will not attempt to summarize or paraphrase his comments, since other
members of this newsgroup have strong opinions which disagree, in some
cases, with Jan's results and I have no desire to get embroiled in defending
his findings. You should go back to the issues which were published shortly
after Sony introduced their HDV camcorders to see the report related to your
specific question regarding HDV versus high quality (VX-2100 style)
camcorders.
