One possibility (given that you can accept the audio quality) is to use
an mp3 player with recording capabilites.
Such a player will compress audio to mp3 on-the-fly and store in flash
memory.
1 Gbyte of flash will give you plenty of storage time...
It will run for hours on battery power.
Much cheaper than a laptop, and very easy to hide....
